자기 이상의 것들을 볼 수 없는 것, "교만" 5학년 딸 아이가 매우 즐겁고 흥분된 상태로 집에 돌아왔습니다. 이유인즉, 자기 반에서 가장 예쁜 아이로 선정되었다는 것이죠. 그 다음 날 역시 웃음을 감추지 못하며 집에 돌아왔습니다. 이번에는 가장 성공할 것 같은 학생으로 선정되었다는 것입니다. 그리고 그 다음 날 역시, 딸아이는 세번째 투표 즉, "가장 인기있는 학생"으로 선정되었다며 기쁨을 감추지 못하였습니다. 그런데, 그 다음 날 딸아이는 매우 우울한 표정을 지으며 집으로 돌아왔습니다. 무슨 일이 있었냐며 엄마가 물었습니다. 오늘은 투표에서 졌냐고 물었더니, 투표에서 이겨 선정되긴 했다는 것이었습니다. 무슨 투표냐고 물었더니, "가장 잘난체 하는 학생"이었다는 것이죠. 누가복음 18장, 바리새인의 기도에서 그는 "나는 (I)"라는 단어를 5번(영어성경) 사용합니다. 그는 두가지 문제, 과장과 축소로부터 고통을 당하였죠. 자기 자신에 대해서는 지나친 과대평가를, 하나님에 대해서는 지나치게 과소평가를 한 것입니다. 바리새인은 자기 자신에 대해 지나치게 크게 평가한 것입니다.
